Deborah Day is a poet, author, mentor, publisher, activist and business consultant. Her poet name is Ashay (sometimes spelled Ashe) and means "life force and it is good" and is sometimes spoken to acknowledge and honor our ancestors. She is from the Midwest and has over 25 years of successful business experience working for several major corporations in sales and marketing. In 1994, she and her son relocated from Chicago to California's Bay Area and in 1997, she started Ashay by the Bay, a marketing and publishing business.
She wrote and self published, Mindful Messages Healing Thoughts for the Hip and Hop Descendants from the Motherland in 2004after she learned that African Americans were 50% of the newly reported HIV/AIDS cases. In her book she uses spoken word to reach and teach youth on HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention and other at risk behavior. Abstinence first is her main message, but she also supports safe protected sex for sexually active teens.
Ms. Day is also the creator and founder of the Mindful Messages Mentoring Program (MMMP) and she wrote the curriculum for the Mindful Messages Mentoring Workbook. The MMMP is designed to reconnect youth ages 11 to 18 to their creative inner spirit and to celebrate their Africentric culture and to empower them with valuable life skills and self knowledge. These character building benefits include increased self esteem, self awareness and decision making. The MMMP is great for home schooling, mentoring and also in the classroom.
She is one of the founding members of the Black Publishers Association, and is also a member of the California Alliance of African American Educators (CAAAE) and the Alameda County African American HIV/AIDS Task Force and networks with several other organizations. Currently, she is expanding the Mindful Messages Mentoring Program and she is directing the MMMP After School and Summer School Programs. One way that she gives back is by donating some of her time and energy to educating youth.
