Independent Study
Independent Study offers flexibility for both Parent/Mentors and Adolescent/Teen(s). Depending on the age and maturity level of the youth, many are able to read the handbook, do the lessons and complete the exercises on their own. Parent/Mentors can then review their work and form discussions around their answers. With this method, Parent/Mentors are somewhat confident of their Adolescent /Teen(s) knowledge and understanding on important topics like abstinence, safe sex, drugs, relationships etc. and feel reasonably sure that their Adolescent/Teen is consciously centered. This method is reaffirming for the both. (To encourage completion of the workbook, parents can reward their Adolescent/Teen(s) with gifts, extra privileges or money as lessons are completed.) Mindful Messenger Certificates of completion are also available online.
One on One Study
One on One Study offers the most in depth study opportunity for Parent/Mentors and Adolescent /Teen(s). With this method, both have read the handbook or they may choose to read it together. And both are actively engaged in reading the poetry (spoken word) and completing the exercises in the workbook together. Working together step by step, Parent/Mentors and Adolescent/Teens(s) can learn at their own pace. Parents /Mentors have many options and can add extra study materials: videos, field trips, books, charts etc. to expand the curriculum as they choose. This method is great for bonding and building trust. (To encourage completion of the workbook, parents can reward their Adolescent/Teen(s) with gifts, extra privileges or money as lessons are completed.) Mindful Messenger Certificates of completion are available online.
Group Study
Group Study is the probably the most engaging and interactive. It can take many forms and serve many purposes. For Educators the MMMP curriculum can supplement existing curriculum and students can be assigned lessons and homework. If you are doing a Rites of Passage Program, the MMMP Curriculum can enhance the core teachings and provide a comprehensive focus. Any form of group study allows Parent/Mentor/Educators the flexibility of introducing a variety of additional study materials to facilitate the learning experience such as: important African and African American books, films, art, symbols, charts, maps, news article, memorabilia, condoms, birth control methods etc. With the Group Study method, all participants can share in reading the poetry and leading points of discussion which can be a very powerful experience. Remember you want to create Mindful Messengers. At the completion of the program students should be acknowledged. Mindful Messenger Certificates of completion are available online.
