Insightful Approach, June 1, 2004

Barbara Lee, Member of Congress 9th District, California (Congress of the United States House of Representatives, Washington, D.C.)

Dear Ms. Deborah Day:

I write this letter to congratulate you on the publication of your book, Mindful Messages, Healing Thoughts for the Hip and Hop Descendants from the Motherland.

Mindful Messages is an insightful and innovative approach to educating our African American youth about the HIV/AIDS pandemic, sexuality and other social concerns. The mixture of poetry, African proverbs and anecdotes, coupled with startling facts and statistics, provides a compelling educational tool that resonates with adolescents and will be appreciated by adults.

As someone with a long standing commitment to winning this battle against HIV/AIDS, I am always grateful for meaningful and informative contributions to the overall dialogue regarding this pandemic. Mindful Messages is a book that should be read by everyone and utilized as a thought provoking teaching tool. In a time when we are all struggling to determine the best ways in which to educate and save lives, Mindful Messages provides a viable solution.

I thank you for your contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS and wish you much continued success. I look forward to working with you in the future on this issue.

"I like Mindful Messages spoken word format. I also think that Mindful Messages is the kind of information that is overdue and should be given to young people in schools.  Because of the serious nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in our community, our youth need to be informed.  As Black folks we must do all we can to prepare them for the future."

Mona Langford (St. Louis, Missouri)
"I am mother with two teenage daughters ages 12 and 16.  I purchased Mindful Messages online through Barnes and Noble.  I had both my daughters do the Independent Study program and I was very pleased with the results.  They completed the workbook on their own and was not bored with the content.  Both of them attend public schools but I do provide home schooling when it comes to our African American heritage.  I think every parent should include Mindful Messages curriculum as a part of their children's educational experience.  I love it! Congratulations Ms. Day."

Tyrone Jackson, Conscious Parent (Brooklyn, New York)
"My wife and I read the Mindful Messages books after our 15 year old son completed the workbook.  My son does not like to read but he likes poetry.  I am most impressed with the way lessons from A to Z and the content.  It kept him focused. This kind of curriculum is a step in the right direction for our youth."
